Sensory Soundness & Herd Dynamics

via ZOOM

Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 7:30pm ET

Our April Webinar speaker is international Clinician Kerry Thomas, just returning from his Australia Clinics.

The premise: "When people ask me to describe my work with horses, I often say this: I translate the equine mind. My work is centered on understanding how horses experience the world, how they perceive their environment, process emotional and sensory information, and express that experience through behavior, movement, and performance."

"We all know what horses are. My work is about uncovering who each horse is. At its heart, this is a journey of discovery, revealing the emotional, sensory, and herd-driven forces that shape a horse’s responses and capabilities. Our goal is collective: to bridge the gap between the natural herd dynamic and the domesticated world."

Meet Laura Harper

Introducing Documentary Filmmaker, Laura Harper. Her award winning film, MUSTANG of THE CARRACAS MESA DOCUMENTARY, is a deep dive into the history of the New Mexico Mustangs.

The 50-million-year-old story of the horse is weaved into a changing world history leaving the beautiful mustang in its Northern New Mexico dust!

In 2020, Laura Harper began work on a film script about her once-wild mustang, Rambo. As she delved into his life, she found Rambo’s story connected the evolution of the horse to New Mexico’s history and her own life in New Mexico's San Juan Basin. Laura discovered that the horses used by the Conquistadors more than five hundred years ago to traverse New Mexico in their search for the Seven Cities of Gold had an ancient bloodline that is a treasure found there today. Laura would find in Rambo her Cibola - one of the Lost Seven Cities of Gold.

Amazingly, a 2013 genetic analysis conducted by Dr. E. Gus Cothran, Department of Veterinary Integrative Bioscience, concluded the Old-World Iberian breed is conclusively a genetic marker present in the Jicarilla mustangs of Northern New Mexico and Rambo’s DNA. By tracing the mustangs’ bloodline, a wonderful history of New Mexico—its wild horses and its people— is revealed and vibrantly retold in Laura’s film, “MUSTANG of the Carracas Mesa: A History of the Jicarilla Mustangs and Mustangers.”

The film features local families that represent the diverse culture of Northern New Mexico "mustangers" and their personal relationships with the Jicarilla mustangs. It is through their individual stories that we learn the Jicarilla mustang’s historic value to Northern New Mexico’s culture. The documentary concludes with the idea that by joining nature, horsemanship, community, science, and technology, there can be a positive future for the mustangs and the mustangers.

“The Iberian: How the Horse of the Past Became

the Horse of the Future”

with Paul Belasik

Thursday, February 26, 2026

Meeting via ZOOM call 7:30 pm ET

“The Iberian: How the Horse of the Past Became the Horse of the Future”

with Paul Belasik, Pennsylvania Riding Academy

In the early 1500’s, Spain occupied Italy. The Spanish troops brought with them their Iberian horses. When the tremendous forces of the Renaissance met the Iberian horse, the trainers of the day had a vehicle to fulfill their creative dreams. Horse ballets began at the same time human ballets were invented, solidifying the connection of Iberian horses to high art and nobility.

In 1572 in Austria, the most famous riding school in the world was founded, and yet many people do not think to ask why it is called the Spanish Riding School. In the 1800’s and 1900’s, the Warmblood horse came to the forefront primarily due to their visibility in the new equestrian sports in the Olympics. Biases and politics locked out other breeds.

Yet in the late 1900’s, Iberians began to show up in competition and people fell in love with them. In this webinar, I will talk about why and how this happened. And, as someone who has been involved in breeding Iberian horses for many years, I want to talk about some dark clouds that could influence this great rebirth of the Iberian horse.

ATTN:  Mature Women Riders Who Want Balance, Responsiveness

and Harmony To Feel Like Second Nature.

–Do you know in your head what you want your body to do, but your body doesn’t cooperate?

–Have you experienced rides where everything just flowed together, but you can’t recapture those rides no matter how hard you try, and wonder ‘Why? What is it I’m missing?’

–Are you left questioning your abilities and wondering if it will all come together in this life time?

If this is you, you’ll gain ability insight in this FREE workshop, 3 Keys To Reveal Your Abilities.

In this webinar you’ll…

–Discover why stubborn, recurring riding problems are not a reflection of your ability & how truly capable you are to quickly improve and make high-quality progress, no matter your age.

–Learn how to ‘Do Less’  with this simple, awareness based movement lesson to dissolve tension and gain the FEEL you need to harmonize with your horse (your horse will love it when you pick up the reins).

–Find out how to get out of your head and occupy your body in the most useful and effortless way possible in the saddle, no matter the breed or discipline.

–Discover ‘the ability insight’ to move past faulty postural issues and frustrating compensations, and reconnect with your body’s natural movement capacity, abilities and coordination….without strain or injuring yourself.

Or

–Begin moving past faulty postural issues and frustrating compensations, and reconnect with your body’s natural movement capacity, abilities and coordination….without strain or injuring yourself.

–Shine a light on your blind spots and missed opportunities to break free of restrictive habits and step into ‘personal authority’ to create rides where everything just comes together and feels so good.

–Find & follow the path that takes you from overthinking and into a truly present, two way conversation with your horse.

–Experience your aha! moment to embody the grace, balance, and awareness of the riders you admire… in this doable movement lesson you develop a more symmetrical use of your torso & lengthening of the leg to bring a SOFT influence into every rider.

‘You are more than just grit and determination, you are more the just muscle and tenacity, you are your sensitivity and your intelligence, the very ingredients you need to ride well and truly connect with your horse.’  Heather Beachum

News from the President

Where We've Been Seen and Other News from ERAHC President Susan Hart

ERAHC proudly sponsored the Working Equitation Course at the Mustang Challenge, held September 4–6 at the prestigious Kentucky Horse Park’s Rolex Arena.

The event was a thrilling success, with Laura Wilson and her remarkable mustang, One Ear Wonder, claiming the top prize of $50,000. We were amazed by the performance of these mustangs, who, in less than a year since leaving the wild, navigated the course with incredible skill and grace.

Expert commentary from Susan Hart and Marsha Hartford-Sapp enriched the live broadcast, captivating audiences throughout the event. Congratulations to all participants, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s competition!

We’re thrilled to announce that Renee O’Leary won our 50/50 raffle and generously donated her winnings back to the club. Her heartfelt contribution to our educational fund is deeply appreciated—thank you, Renee!

We’re excited to open nominations for the upcoming Executive Board elections. Submit your nominations by November 1st to help shape the future of our organization.
